Classification:

Scientific Name: Spirobolus
Common Name: Common Millipede
Class: Myriapoda
Scientific Name: Spirobolus
Common Name: Common Millipede
General Characteristics:
Common millipedes are have a round and elongated body with many small legs. They have numerous distinct segments. Centipedes are typically dark brown in color. They have mandibles used to chewing and grinding rotting organic matter such as leaves or wood. Because they lack a waxy cuticle to prevent water loss, the millipede spends most of its time in warm, moist areas. They are typically smaller than the closely related centipedes and have shorter legs in a higher volume per segment than millipedes. When disturbed, millipedes will curl into a tight coil for protection.
Habitat:
Millipedes require moist environments such as under rocks, logs or lawn thatch. They can be fairly wide-spread so long as the moisture in the air is sufficient.
Inportance to Humans:
Although millipedes do no pose any danger to humans, they can become an annoyance by invading homes through small cracks and crevices.
