General Characteristics:
Scycon is a genus of small sponges that typically grow to 2.5-7.5cm in length. They are tube shaped and often white or cream in coloration. The single opening withing the cyclindral body is framed by fine hair-like structures to bring water into the central cavity. Reproduction is either sexual or asexual depending on the environmental conditions. Larvae are usually released in the spring and the sponge dies immediately after.
Habitat:
Sycon prefer shallow waters where it can be attached to rocks or algae. They are common along the Atlantic coast of Europe.
Importance to Humans:
Other than playing a role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem, the Sycon genus has no known importance to humans.
